Rainforest Restoration Pilot Project · Menglun Middle School

Good to Nature has been collaborating with the Restoration Ecology Research Group, XTBG in Xishuangbanna, to rapidly restore the 20-mu monoculture rubber plantation at Menglun Middle School to a close-to-nature rainforest, significantly improving the local ecosystem services. Additionally, the plan is to standardize the successful restoration model at Menglun Middle School and promote it to other areas in Xishuangbanna to expand its influence and restoration effectiveness.

    Good to Nature’s Solution

Good to Nature is dedicated to exploring effective pathways for Social Sectors to recognize, understand, and participate in solving natural-related issues. We have proposed an effective closed-loop model of "scientific restoration and protection - sustainable support from local communities - active participation of Social Sectors." This model has achieved a certain degree of success in our pilot projects for rainforest restoration in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.

(Natural regeneration)

It is widely used in the restoration of tropical degraded forest ecosystems. This method refers to the simple protection of restored plots to avoid further human disturbance, allowing species to recover through natural processes, restoring biodiversity, community structure, and ecological functions of forest ecosystems.

This method is most suitable for plots with low levels of degradation and small remnants of forest, or plots that have undergone natural regeneration. It is one of the few feasible methods for large-scale forest restoration.

As of December 2023, 90 new species of plant restored

(Framework tree species approach)

In the initial stage, 20-30 pioneer and top-level tree species are carefully selected, cultivated, and planted to provide a framework for subsequent succession and development. The flowers and fruits of these tree species can attract the arrival of wild animals such as birds and beasts, and bring a large number of nearby seeds, enhancing the diversity of tropical rainforest species.

Planted a total of 363 seedlings from 10 species

As of now, the survival rate reached 97%

(Nucleation Approach

Using the characteristics of the Ficus genus, such as well-developed roots, high survival rate of propagation, and the ability of tissues to integrate with each other, gradually butt jointing can be carried out to form a "single-tree forest" landscape. This is not only a unique landscape, but also an effective way to stabilize soil and prevent soil erosion.

Conducted biological restoration of slopes, and planted more than 100 plants

such as Ficus microcarpa, Ficus altissima, and Spathiphyllum pinnatum

During the Festival, Good to Nature launched summer city camps, aiming at motivating more urban youth to participate in ecosystem restoration practices, by giving them the opportunity to communicate directly with rainforest professors from around the world and learn about rainforest knowledge in a tangible way.

Rainforest experts from eight regions around the world brought basic knowledge lectures on rainforests to students during the summer city camps. The experts' sharing covered various aspects of rainforest biodiversity, restoration stories and methods, and how local communities rely on and protect rainforests. Students shared their knowledge to the audience in the Global Rainforest exhibition area.

Rainforest and Urban Youth Co-Growth 20 Year Plan

Project Challenge & Overall Project Objective

It takes 20 years for rainforest restoration to begin to bear fruit, and the education and development of young people is also a long and continuous process. We have found that current projects are all one-year programmes. However, in order to cultivate rainforest youth to participate in rainforest restoration over the long term, as well as to achieve their personal holistic development, we need a long-term plan to guide the sustainable growth of children in local communities. Good to Nature looks forward to utilising the leading resources of our global network of partners, starting with the Rainforest Youth of Yunnan, China, as a prime example of a local community, to nurture the Global Future Rainforest Guardians.

Earth Citizen Camps: empowering youth to grow with ecosystem restoration

We plan to launch a fellowship programme connecting with urban youths. Through a series of projects, global youths will grow together with rainforest restoration. Over the course of the 20-year programme, we aim to provide real benefits to local youth, as well as to urban youth, so that they can learn about their responsibilities as global citizens and contribute to the rainforest protection.
